Cancer New Moon, and Solar Eclipse, and Summer Solstice, OH MY!
We are in the energy of the Cancer New Moon.
New Moon Information and Tarot Reading
Before we talk about the new moon I wanted to talk about this year. We are halfway through June and what a month it has been! We have been in various stages of lockdown and isolating since March and each month seems to be getting weirder and June hasn’t held back with the BLM movement going on in the United States and the ripple effect that has been having in many other areas.
I know this is a challenging time for many and for all kinds of reasons but I honestly believe that this is leading us to an new awareness and awakening that will bring about real change. I hope you are taking this time to listen to BIPOC and I mean REALLY LISTEN to them and take what they are saying to heart and learning where you can best help bring change.
Myself and many other empaths are feeling it so hard and leading up to the Cancer New Moon will only amplify this especially with the solar eclipse happening at the same time. Just for fun these are both happening with the Summer Solstice and Mercury going retro, plus who can forget about the other planets in retrograde and tossing their hat into the ring. Oh it is interesting times to say the least.
New Moons are the start of the moon cycles and a great time to set your intentions and make a plan for the next month cycle. Below we will find out how to work with Cancer and make plans for June and the summer. I would highly recommend adding in healing for the earth and for the people who are hurting.
Cancer time is family & home time.
The sweet and sensitive crab likes to remind us to take the time to take care of our family, home, and self.
Reach out to your family and check in with how they are doing with isolation or how they are feeling about things opening back up. Check in with your friends and see if they need some help.
Take a look at your home and see what projects need to be finished up and give it some much needed TLC.
Self review
Check in with yourself and see where you have been putting up walls and barriers with others or situations. With the isolations that have been going on it is easy to keep people away and hide your feelings. Dig deep and look where you can reach out and to whom. Connect with others and allow yourself to open up and be vulnerable about anything you have been keeping in. Meditation is an amazing tool for this. Keep your moodiness in check as Cancer can bring that out in people and they tend to wallow and brood.
We are halfway through the year and now is a great time to reevaluate your goals, maybe you were able to get a lot done during isolating or maybe the things you wanted in January no longer feel right to where you want to go after watching everything unfold. Review and rewrite where it needs to. Shed old shells that no longer fit. Now set it as an intention and make a plan!
Nurture, Nurture, NURTURE!
Cancer wants to take care of everyone let this energy inspire you to take care of yourself with some extra self care, get your body moving in a fun way preferably with your close people, make some soul food (I know most soul food tends to be soups and stews and not great in the summer but it’s what we need right now), give yourself a spa day at home, and create a place within your home that you feel safe and like you can retreat to. While you are taking care of yourself and maybe bring a loved one in on it with you. Do your kids nails or hair or make an extra batch of stew or fresh bread for a family member. Taking care of others can be easy and a way to take care of yourself.
Get yourself to water
Water is life, we all know we are in large part water. Drink more water, this will help flush your body and keep you hydrated.
Take a bath or a relaxing shower. Add in bath salts, salt scrubs, and essential oils to help you relax and to treat your body to something nice.
If you are lucky enough to be near a lake, an ocean, or a river go to it and sit near it or if it is warm enough go for a swim and embrace the energy of the water.
Summer Solstice – Litha
Litha is such a bittersweet day for me, I LOVE summer it is my favourite time of the year. I love the hot weather, the thunderstorms we get on the prairies, and all the fresh fruit! However the arrival of the summer solstice also means the days start to become shorter and that mean it is no longer bright out at 10pm, and that makes me sad.
While I know it takes a couple months for it to go down to dusk at 7, I notice the difference within a week at night.
Onto more positive aspects of the start of summer!
Ways to celebrate
- We are starting to see some of our crops maturing and able to harvest and that is an amazing way to celebrate Litha. Bring some of your plants onto your altar and as part of your ritual meal.
- Fires are a huge part of the celebration to safely light a backyard fire pit, bonfire, or just light some candles to honour the sun.
- Spend time outside, as much as you can! Stay hydrated and practice sun safety.
- Good daytime activities to do are anything that celebrate the sun. Drawing suns in chalk on the sidewalks or symbols that represent your favourite sun deity or aspect. I personally am drawn to the Greek Parthenon and often refer to Apollo for my own sun needs.
- Cloud scrying (or as most people call it cloud watching) is a fun and easy activity especially if you have children. You can keep it simple and look for images for fun, or you can take it deeper and look for meaning in the shapes you are seeing.
Food
The meal is an important part of any ritual celebration or holiday and Litha gives us many options because of the time of the year it is. Fresh fruit, fresh veggies, meat and alternative options, and herbs are easily found.
- Fresh Fruit, there are a lot of early berries that are already producing fruit such as raspberries and blueberries.
- Early veggies like peas and some beans
- Lemon flavoured anything, lemonade, lemon cakes, and lemon tarts to name a few.
- Lavender, it is ready to harvest and ads flavour to almost anything, use it in or on items.
- Fresh herbs in drinks or cooking add lovely touches.
- Honey! The bees have been working hard and have some extra to share with us and the fairies love it as an offering.
- Cakes, bread, and baked treats are great for any type of celebration from casual to more formal. Add honey, lemon, fruit, and fresh herbs on top for a pop of decoration.
- Freeze herbs and fruit in ice cubs to spruce up your drinks.
- Mead, Ale, and Wine are great drinks. Feel free to make your own fresh cocktail if you feel inspired to.
- Gin and Vodka would be great to infuse with fresh ingredients. This will need to be made ahead of time for ritual or you can incorporate making this as part of your ritual and drank later.
Enjoy your celebration!
